Podcasting to support vocational learning
How can podcasts be used in teaching and learning to support vocational learners?
Most learners today, have some sort of portable device on which audio files can be played; this technology is part of many young people's lives. Teachers should embrace it and use it as a tool to enhance traditional lessons and provide support for learners.
By making podcasts, learning becomes mobile. It does not replace the classroom, but extends it. Learning can take place at anytime, anywhere to suit the learner.
Teachers of vocational learners that may be near the pass/fail borderline may find podcasting an effective and useful tool to add to their repertoire of strategies. Some of the key reasons why it can be very effective in supporting vocational learners are listed below.
It enables the teacher to:
- record class notes, lessons, instructions and tasks for learners.
- record verbal feedback via mp3 files or embed verbal feedback in assignments (see - Accessibility/Differentation).
bring topics to life, with locally made podcasts and ones from relevant websites.- reinforce learning, provide study skills tips - handy when exams are looming.
- make lessons into active learning - involving learners in the process of making podcasts, eg recording interviews, adding music/jingles to podcasts.
- engage learners who do not like reading lots of text or find reading difficult.
- personalise learning and feedback in a discreet way.
- differentiate to accommodate varying levels within a group.

- listen to verbal feedback on assignments - useful for reflection.
- record their own contributions/interviews.
